Flora Fauna Fungi

In which I make weekly hyper-seasonal playlists named after different plants, animals and mushrooms found in the Puget Sound region. You know, something EVERYONE can enjoy. The name isn’t a Simpsons reference, and for that I’m truly sorry.

ReD-Breasted Merganser

2/23/25

Red-breasted mergansers fly rapidly, and feed by diving from the surface to pursue aquatic animals underwater, using serrated bills to capture slippery fish. Music is increasingly Art Pop, POV: Indie, and Slowcore, while decreasingly Dream Pop, Vintage Italian Soundtrack, and Midwest Emo. Start with one or more of these tracks if you don’t want to commit to the full hour:

Dunlin

2/16/25

The Dunlin is a small, brown wading bird that breeds in Alaska and the Canadian Arctic before migrating to the Pacific coast for winter. Music is increasingly Dream Pop, Vintage Italian Soundtrack, and Midwest Emo, while decreasingly droney, Dark Ambience. I think my friends will like about half of this playlist. Here’s come choice nuggs by Skott, Sufjan Stevens, Cigarettes After Sex (x3), Sombr, Novo Amor featuring Lowswimmer, Coldplay, and Teen Suicide:

Horned Grebe

2/9/25

The horned grebe can be recognized by its orange-red and black breeding plumage, its black and white non-breeding plumage, and its characteristic "horns". Music is ambient and droney, but increasingly non-instrumental. My friends might enjoy the following sad songs in the Dream Pop, Indie and Emo spaces:

Surf Scoter

2/2/25

The Surf Scoter is a sea duck with distinctive marking native to North America. It nests in northern climates and comes south for the winter. I’m continuing on with this experiment to create hyper-seasonal playlists, even if the music falls outside of genres I’d typically listen to. This week’s top genres are Dark Ambient and Soundtrack Music.
